Therapy FAQs

What concerns do you work with?

I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression and mood concerns, stress, difficult life experiences, relationship difficulties, and patterns that can feel hard to understand or change. I have a particular interest in attachment, family-of-origin experiences, and romantic relationship patterns.

What is attachment-focused therapy?

Attachment-focused therapy looks at how you experience connection, closeness, vulnerability, conflict, trust, and emotional safety in important relationships.

Attachment patterns can be influenced by early relationships as well as experiences throughout your life. Rather than trying to fit you into an attachment-style label, we’ll look at the patterns that are actually showing up for you and what happens when relationships feel uncertain or emotionally important.

What does family-of-origin therapy mean?

Family-of-origin work explores how the relationships and environment you grew up with may continue to influence you as an adult.

This can include family roles, parentification, enmeshment, emotional availability, expectations, guilt, conflict, boundaries, and generational patterns.

The goal isn’t to blame your family. It’s to understand what you learned about yourself and relationships and decide what still works for you now.

Can I come to therapy to talk about my romantic relationship without my partner?

Yes. Individual therapy can be a place to understand what’s happening within a romantic relationship even when your partner isn’t participating.

We might explore attachment patterns, conflict, emotional availability, trust, recurring relationship dynamics, breakups, dating, or uncertainty about a relationship.

Therapy isn’t about telling you whether you should stay or leave. It’s about helping you understand your experience clearly enough to make your own decisions.

Do you provide couples therapy?

I currently provide individual psychotherapy rather than couples therapy. You’re welcome to use individual therapy to explore concerns related to dating, marriage, partnerships, breakups, or other romantic relationships.

Do I need to know my attachment style before starting therapy?

No. You don’t need to identify as anxious, avoidant, disorganized, secure or know anything about attachment theory—to benefit from attachment-focused therapy.

Attachment styles can sometimes provide useful language, but they aren’t rigid personality types. We’ll focus more on your individual experiences and patterns than on assigning you a category.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session gives us time to understand what brings you to therapy, what’s happening in your life now, and what you’d like to be different.

I’ll ask about your current concerns as well as relevant relationships, experiences, history, and patterns. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on or having everything figured out.

We’ll begin identifying what might be most useful for us to focus on together.

Where do you provide therapy?

I provide online therapy through secure telehealth sessions for adults located in Virginia, Washington, DC, Colorado, Utah, and Florida.

Do you accept insurance?

I am in-network with most plans through Optum, Aetna, BCBS of Massachusetts, Anthem BCBS of Virginia, and CareFirst BCBS for Washington DC. I run an insurance verification prior to meeting to check coverage.

What if you don’t take my insurance or I don’t have insurance?

Individual counseling

  • $150 per 45-minute session

Do you offer superbills?

Yes. While I am not in-network with all insurance providers, you may still be able to use your out-of-network benefits to offset the cost of sessions. Many insurance plans include out-of-network coverage for mental health services, which means you could be reimbursed for a portion of your session fee after paying out of pocket.

To make this process as simple as possible, I use Thrizer. It is a platform that automatically generates a superbill on your behalf and can submit it directly to your insurance company. You can check your out-of-network benefits before your first appointment using this link:

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information your insurance company needs to process your reimbursement. Rather than waiting until the end of the month to submit paperwork yourself, Thrizer handles it for you in real time.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate with the initial paperwork on the client portal before your appointment. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate or the dispute process, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 368-1019.
